For the last 10 years,a research scientist at the University of Rutgers has been studying the way drugs like Voltaren, diclofenac and diclofenac sodium react with the anti-inflammatory effects of diclofenac sodium. Last year, we reviewed a paper published in the Journal of Drug Evaluation, looking at how these drugs interact with diclofenac, naproxen and ibuprofen. The interaction between these two drugs is what led to the use of diclofenac sodium as a pain reliever.“This study shows that these drugs, although they are different in their chemical structure, actually work the same way in the body,” says Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy Professor of Pharmacy at Rutgers University.
Voltaren, diclofenac sodium and naproxen are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) used for pain relief. Voltaren is an example of this drug class, and it is FDA approved for the pain relief of arthritis. Diclofenac sodium is a pain reliever. As a class, each group of drugs has been used as a pain reliever, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve). Diclofenac sodium is FDA approved for the pain relief of arthritis. Naproxen is a class of drugs used to treat pain and inflammation in arthritis.
The study involved 10 volunteers taking two NSAID drugs, naproxen and diclofenac sodium. The volunteers took a placebo and received a placebo treatment for 4 weeks. After that, they were followed up for 2 to 4 weeks. After the 2-week follow-up period, they were asked to describe their responses to each of the drugs. They took each drug at home for 2 days. Then, they took each of the drugs and each of the pain relievers for 4 weeks, followed by naproxen. After the 4 weeks, a skin test was performed on each of the volunteers to assess the sensitivity of the skin to each drug. After that, the volunteers were asked to report the side effects they experienced. They were also asked to describe the level of pain the skin test showed. After that, the volunteers were asked to report any changes in their skin. They took naproxen for 4 weeks and received a second skin test, again at home. They were also asked to report any changes in their skin that were beyond the 0.5 to 1.0 mcg dose range.
